Default I just tried to get my cabin air filter out and failed. Is my car different?

I found somewhere (not sure where) a PDF file with pictures showing the steps to take to replace the cabin air filter. I was good up until I got to the part where I'm actually supposed to pull the filter out (I removed all the covers, windshield wipers, etc). I couldn't get it out. There is an extra plastic and rubber flap holding the filter in at the top of the filter box and it goes down about two inches over the filter. After much prying and bending I pulled the flap partly away from the filter in the middle, but it was still attached on the sides and wouldn't come out. I had to abandon my effort when the sun went down.

How do I get around this flap?

On the cabin air intake, there is a flap that can open and close. Behind this flap is the shroud where the cabin filter goes. The top of the cabin filter shroud can be removed with three screws. Once removed, the cabin filter drops in through a slot. Behind the cabin filter is the air conditioning evaporator core.

When I did mine, I had to remove alot of leaves from the shroud area...

My car is a 95.5 US spec S6 sedan. Build date August 95

Default Hmmmm. I removed the top of the shroud, and did see lots of leaves in there.

But the filter didn't just pull out / drop in through a slot on top. Over the top of the filter was a plastic piece that was part of the entire shroud and couldn't be removed. The only way seemed to be to pull the filter around that plastic piece and then up at an angle. But I couldn't pull the filter around the piece because the flap in question was holding the filter in place.

Default Yes, that's exactly what I had

The filter sits directly below the plastic piece where the three bolts where attached. But I can't pull the filter out because there's another flap holding it in. In your picture, you would reach down into the crack and feel towards the front of the car. There's a big plastic and rubber piece at the top which is still in the way.

Default sounds like the recirc flap and it shouldn't be in the way

The filter should pull directly up and out of the slot, it's a large, thin element. Sometimes leaves and debris make it stick in the slot, but nothing actually holds it in place. Alot of the replacements have 2 thin strips to help you lift it up and out.
