If I want to remove the subframe, do I need to brace the engine from above?

The engine is not mounted to the subframe. The transmission is though.

Does the tranny need to be braced when removing the subframe?

Yes, it should. Just use a small jack or a 2x4 cut the correct length.

Hijack: can the bushings be done by dropping and not completely removing the subframe?
