The guy pulled my car onto the lift and then walked all the way back over to me.
"Uh, do you have winter wheels for those?" he asks.
"No, no. I'd just like them mounted up on the current wheels" I say.
"Uhmmm... are you sure you want to do that? You realize those wheels are going the be thrashed by the end of winter right?"
"Yeah, that's what I was thinking..."
"All your chrome... is going to be peeling off..." he says.
"Have you ever pationately hated something before?" I ask.
"Well... yeah."
"Yeah... The more that peels off the better..."
Besides from my little conversation with the guy at Kal-Tire, the only other interesting part of the event was finding out that the tires rub on the black plastic fender innards at (close to) full lock. The tires are 245/40/18 Michelin Pilot Sport PA2's and yes, I do know that they should be a 35 profile... but you can tell that to my wheels after they go through a couple of the giant pot holes around here.

155/60/16 4 lyfe. I can't imagine running 18s, 17" cast wheels barely survive three summers where I live.

*Disclaimer*
This only pertains to NON-studded winter tires.

The thing is, YES skinnier winter tires are good in conditions where there is light, unpacked snow that the tire can cut through. In packed snow or cold roads that do not have snow on them (95% of last winter here in Edmonton) a wider tire will put more rubber to the ground than a skinnier tire. If Edmonton got light snow most of the winter, it'd be a different story... but if this winter is anything like last chances of me driving in those sorts of conditions are 4-5 in 365.
18s? Well... they might not be the perfect winter wheels but I can't wreck my 17" minty Boleros and I sold the S4 Avus wheels. Besides, they're getting refinished come spring anywho... so who cares how much they flake/peel as long as I don't curb or bend them it's all good.
