Okay, so I followed this description to reprogram the RF remote for my S6 to a T. New batteries installed and everything.
http://www.s-cars.org/postnuke/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=arti cle&sid=211
This is the remote I have (see above).
What gives... the process sounded stupid. I have something else that says only the dealer can program it if it's the first time used with that car.

S-cars.org - RF Reporgram Procedure

This '95.5 stuff is making me nuts...
I was told this remote works for 1996-1998 Audi A6. I was told 1995.5 is really same as a 1996, but dubbed a '95.5 because of the OBDII issue (so they can't technically call it a '96).
This is the same remote my mom had for her '97 A6. My keyfob is FCCID: MZ2 410 819 4.
My car did not come with a keyless entry keyfob, like the one you pictured. I bought this one off Ebay, and was told it would work.
What is the PN#, etc for THIS remote (pictured)? What's with all this one year 95.5 stuff. It's driving me nuts!
I'm guessing these remotes are NLA from the dealer?

My keyfob is FCCID: MZ2 410 819 4 (as stated in that article).. But, I'm guessing now that my RF module is probably different and my remote won't talk to it.
I think the later cars can use anything, including the "switchblade" keys.

Programming sometimes requires several tries, but it takes forever if you use the wrong remote.
The remote pictured does not work with 1996 A6's either.

But, will my '96-97 A6 remote work on a '95.5? That is the question.
If not, I guess I'm off to the stealer again (gasp!). I only need one remote, so maybe not so bad. Thanks for the info.
Do you have a Part# or UCC#?
