is this true? he also said it is a $900+ job? just quickly reading the forums it sounds like it is just the master cylinder and not the whole clutch and at most should be cheaply, modestly, done or done myself when the cylinder choices to die? my car only has 87,000 miles on it, so i don't think i need a new clutch any time soon. what do you guys think?

I had to replace Master/Slave cylinders on mine. It was spongy before and became stiff after repair and bleed.

the pedal takes a little effort to depress, it is stiffer then other cars but not bad, my 70 camaro is much stiffer! the clutch engages pretty darn smooth, but i have never driven another old s car so i have no comparison... so does this mean the whole clutch or just the cylenders????

There for something else ?
At one time the advice I was given was : "if it isn't slipping, leave it alone, and don't waste money replacing it until it is"

way it goes on these cars. If you ignore the stiff clutch symptom and don't change the clutch, the clutch pedal will eventually snap from fatigue. THEN you have a PROBLEM. (read: Stranded - unless you are real good at rev matching).
Your choice: Heed the words of experience or ignore them because you "know better".
Oh, yeah, mileage doesn't matter - its wear and abuse that matter.
