I am sorry to keep repeating this, thanks to those of you that offered suggestions, I have looked into all of them without finding a solution... so I give it one more try before I take the car in for a review.
I met up with fellow UrS owner this weekend(thanks Tom) to take a look at his beautiful white S4's,. While there I asked him about the engine noise I have, and we are both still stumped.
The engine noise sounds like a loud fan (some might say jet engine like). When you first start the car there is no noise. Leave it running for a while and as the engine warms up the noise gets louder and louder.
The fan clutch was just replaced as I thought it was the cause (it was on the way out anyway, so no harm no foul). We checked the AC and it is not engaged when the noise is present. When I engage the A/C it makes it's familiar noise (that is drowned out by this other noise) and the second fan (electric) comes on as it should.
There isn't a ticking, or another noise, just the loud fan noise. It also seems to affect the "free rev-ing" nature of the engine. When I first showed up and Tom's he heard the noise and didn't think anything of it. When I left the car off for a while and then restarted, noise was gone and the difference was very noticable to him (as it is to me![Smile](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
I am in boston area if anyone would be kind enough to give it a look, but advice by itself is more than welcome.
Thanks in advance.

If you don't already have one, buy one of the stethescope sound probes. The one with the rod and ear pieces. They are most helpful in pinpointing noise sources.

Tore down the front and and had the pump out in under an hour. Forked over $110 at the dealer to get one that night.

I had a car make a very similar noise when I was missing a resonator on an aftermarket intake I had. Check the intake for any loose hoses or possibly a loose airbox cover.
