Default Mushy brakes: any suggestion as to the cause? ...

Yesterday night I was driving in the rain and a speedbump caught me by surprise. I hit the brakes as hard as I could, had very little road before the bump. It was the very first time I noticed ABS intervention, since I own the car (about 6 months). I conducted a few tests on dry pavement and can't get a sounds out of tires or any indication of ABS action. There is no initial bite, just some diving and fairly decent retardation. Pads were changed recently. Rotors are in good condition even though showing some wear - a visible lip at the border. Fluid was changed along with the pads. The only other thing I can think of is air inside the lines. Any suggestions? How do I know if I need to bleed the brakes?

Default It does sounds like air in the lines.

You may have created or moved a bubble around in the ABS pump or a caliper. In that case a good bleed will fix it. Try your ABS test on a dirt road and see if you can lock any of them up.

If a bleed doesn't help, another possibility is that you balooned a brake line. Have a friend stand on the brakes hard while you inspect the rubber line to each caliper looking for bulges. You'd need to replace all the lines, maybe with SS braided ones, and flush the system.

Good luck,
Rich
