the down side is that it doesn't have the anti-drain back valve. I used the bigger filter once and it seemed to hold no more oil than the regular one. I stick with the regular MANN filter

The filter I use is the long, one quart filter that fits older VW / Datsun Diesels and also fits the newer 2.8 30V.
There are also fitments for the new 30V that use the 1/2 quart filter, that looks the same, only chopped in half.
I've been using either Baldwin or Mahle's on the filter - look up a filter for a 99 A6 2.8 or even an 84 VW Rabbit Diesel, and you should get the same number. This last time, I used a K and N though, which is the traditional skinny filter.

You can buy the Mahle 1 quart filter (or Mann) that is double the capacity of the stock filter. Double the capacity = more oil = more oil filter cooling surface = more filter element surface = more oil in system / better off.
I've used the larger Diesel/2.8 30V filter on every Audi I've had. And yes, it will increase total capacity from about 5 quarts to a bit more than 5 1/2.
