Default "drilled" is really the wrong word

if a rotor is cast with the holes from the factory it isn't done by a drill bit at all...

Default Drilled is the wrong word when using it in place of vented. These are cast vented and cross drilled.

Default Yes, and no.

Yes, almost all rotors with axial (hub-parallel) holes are drilled. And yes, the radial (tangential to the hub) vents are cast right into those rotors.

Porsche, however, does it differently. When they cast their rotors, the axial holes are cast into the rotors, and not drilled through after.

Drilling causes weak spots and can propagate cracking. Cast holes don't do this. Which is why Porsche rotors don't crack under heavy track use, and cross-drilled rotors can (and do).

Default I ran these for 3 years from the same seller...

Basically same price (as I recall). The set lasted me for just over 60K Km. Ran Hawk HPS on the fronts and OE pads rear. Replaced all four rotors at once as the fronts were worn out and the rears were wearing poorly due to a: **** metal and b: not enough heat to clean them up regularly. Could be the rears fell apart due to dying calipers (both replaced with rebuilt) but I wasn't expecting much more from the rotors anyways. I lucked-out on a used ECS stage2 kit and then put zimmermans on the rear, again with oe pads.

I say go for it, expect maybe 2 good seasons from them, anything more is gravy... can't argue with the investment. (oh, and the service from the seller was stellar... sort of. They'd sent me 2 rear rotors with the same drill pattern, not proper left/right. I e-mailed them a picture and had a correct replacement in hand 2 days later at no extra cost, nor did I have to return wrong one. A+)

Cheers,

E

EDIT: I only ran one track day with this setup (and stock suspension...blown at that... boo) and it didn't take may laps to push the pedal to the floor. I never wanted for more on the street, these were definitely an improvement over the worn-out brakes that came with my car.

That's fair. All I am (and was) saying is that these are good cross drilled rotor for DD street use.

Default I bought a full set of drilled/slotted rotors that came w/ mintex redbox pads all around from:

R1 Concepts Inc.
They had an ebay auction for the premiums (front & rear w/ all pads) that was ridiculous ($265 shipped).
They have held up VERY well and have no rotor warp and while I'm on my second set of pads, the rotors all work smoothly.

Still wish I had gone w/ Big Reds....

R1 Concepts web site.

Default DD x-drilled rotors have been known to crack, too.

No upside and all downside means "skip".

Default I've beaten the **** out of mine on the coupe (996tt rotor rings), no cracking

using some extremely aggressive track pads.

Then again, I had to throw away a set of A8 rotors the surface was so cracked from overheating at the track....

Default Like I said. In my experience they have not cracked. But I have warped regular vented rotors before.

So I am going to stick with these I guess.
