Default Is replacing the fan clutch a straight forward procedure?

I get a howling noise from the engine and I'm prety sure it is the fan clutch. When you rev the motor, the fan expands and howles prety loud. Spinning the fan manuly with the motor off, the fan doesnt free spin.

To get to it do I have to remove the cross member?

Any suggestions or BTDT greatly appreciated.

Default No, like I was telling you yesterday I think just the upper core support.

I just could not remember whether the fan clutch had right or left hand threads. Maybe someone on here will remember, if you try to loosen it the wrong way you will be tightening it and you will struggle with it. BMWs have left hand threads, I can't remember which way these are threaded. BTW, that upper core support takes about 5 minutes to get off and the fan should take another 5 minutes. Easy job!

Default I just read Bill The Cat's procedure and it sounded like a lot more than a 10 min job...

I will ask him about the threads

https://forums.audiworld.com/s4s6/msgs/79176.phtml</a

Default It sure does, maybe you should do it like I told ya =)P

Find out which way the threads go and use a slugging wrench. And if you want to borrow my 32mm slugging wrench let me know, you are welcome to it. I probably should have given it to you yesterday but I was in a hurry.

Default The main headaches are sourcing/making a pin wrench to hold the pulley and a thin enough wrench...

I used a bicycle bottom bracket wrench (32 mm and very thin) and I had a pulley from a parts car so I was able to create a fugly (but functional) pin wrench. I'm pretty sure (but not absolutely certain) the threads are left handed. I can post pics/measurements if it would help- let me know.

Default I don't remember if it is right hand or left thread, but with the new part in hand...

it is easy to figure out (use your finger nail inside the threads - or you thumb.)

I have had NO issue after dressing out the nicks I put in the old pulley using the channel locks. There are no marks on the back of the belt at all.

I bought the replacement clutch from FAP99.

Default I have a slugging wrench made just for those fan clutches

I was trying to fing a pic on the net but I could'nt. Its a thin walled 32mm wrench that you hit with a hammer so you do not have to hold the pulley. I bought it for BMW fan clutches but it works on others also, I believe I used it on mine when I did my t-belt.

Default I went to the cheap tool store

and bought a 1-1/4" big a$$ combination wrench. (A whole $5.) Went to work on the grinder to thin it out (it was OK on the stock clutch as is, - no-go on the replacement).

Great idea on the 'slug' - if I ever have to go there again - I'll leave the belt on & whack away with the dead blow. (May help to have 'friend' hold more pressure on the tensioner.)

I am thinking also of a modified strap wrench using an old serp & a vice grip....

Default

I like the idea of the serpentine belt strap wrench made out of a old belt.
