So I was in the process of installing control arms today when...
the jack I was using to support the control arm (not the one holding the car up) slipped and everything (hub) was forced back and away from the car. The brake lines were streched, but still seem OK to me. Unfortunatly the drive shaft pulled out of the outer CV joint. I was able to feed the drive shaft back into the joint, but I'm curious if I broke a circlip or something? I didn't think the joint could seperate like that unless something broke.
This is the third C4 I've replaced control arms on, and i've never had so much trouble trying to get it back together. Was fighting with it for over an hour when this happened. I decided to call it a night.
Do I need a new CV joint?

if the driveshaft pulled out of the CV joint, then the circlip is broken or is pulled off
It takes quite a lot of force to separate the CV from the driveshaft - I'd recommend pulling off the joint and installing a boot kit with new circlip.

Is there a Fred Murno writeup on this...
I think I used a belt strap or something to force the sway bar in so I could get it in place last time... It was a PITA.
Don't know if there's an easier or reccomended procedure vs. us Audi tool #... You know, something for regular guys.

^^ I agree with what he said....
I think you can get new circlips, boots, grease and all the parts to rebuild these things on ECS Tunings web site.
I think they offer just the circlip, but that that point, might as well buy a boot kit and rebuild the outers.<ul><li><a href="http://www.ecstuning.com/stage/edpd/pagebuild_v2.cgi?make=Audi&engine=20v%20T& model=C4%20S6&submodel=Quattro&category=Dr ivetrain&subcategory=Driveshaft">ECS Tuning - Boot Kit</a></li></ul>

The car was safe...
It was resting on a cement block. I had two jacks... one to lift the car onto the block and another to move the control arm into place. I've been working on cars a long time and done some stupid things, but dropping a car on my head isn't going to be one of them.
