upper strut mount r&r completed, few oberservations, questions.
OBSERVATIONS
1. I should have done this months ago....piece of cake when you have the Hazet cut-out socket.
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/8272/img_2077.jpg">
(new mount with pn cast into metal)
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/8272/img_2083.jpg">
2. My old mounts were/are shot. See photos- 1 cracked and torn, one separated at the inner race
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/8272/img_2084.jpg">
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/8272/img_2086.jpg">
3. note to self...don't jack up car until the end and only after old mount is off and new one on and cupped washer and strut nut on to hand tight.
<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/8272/img_2082.jpg">
4.jack up car just enough to raise it up to height of strut mount then use screwdrivers to "wedge" mount overtop of studs. Raise just a little more and hand-thread three nuts back onto studs, then lower down and allow car's weight to
compress strut.
QUESTIONS (sorry, no Bentley for this car)
1. I only have the black plastic sleeve that goes around the metal cupped washer that goes under the strut mount and keeps the strut from popping through the mount if it fails on one side. Not sure how long it's been missing...could have been gone for a while, or omitted at re-assembly when I had the front suspension rebuilt a year ago. How necessary is it and what purpose does it serve?
2. Should any grease be applied to the underside of the rubber mount so that the cupped washer/sleeve can spin easier? There's no bearing there so I wondered, but didn't as I didn't see any evidence of any having been there before.

The PN you show 4A0 412 388B confuses Kate. She says it's 377C (No.36 inside). Whatup?

LOL at that. A freind has an air gun. We've done two front struts on my C4 100 in like 45 minutes.
The rear is a lot more work from what I've heard but by no means difficult.

Dave, 377c is on the boxes. These are the "JL Germany" autohausaz specials.
50331 is the generic part number
I wonder if it has anything to do with the 'revision' of the bad parts run that caused these things to fail in such short order?
made in china of course, but Santa's budget was a little tight this year. 8^(

yeah, I think it took me about 10 minutes to do the other side. 8^)
piece of cake, and I have an air gun too. I just think I wanted to use the right tool...I mean it's been laying in my toolbox since I did the cq suspension eons ago...and it was easy to torque the top nut that way too.

I understand what you are saying but seeing as the rubber is bonded to the metal, Audi is less than
brilliant on the PN.
Similar issue with the RS2 exhaust manifold. The manifold without the wastegate studs has a different PN than with the studs. At least the studs are separate parts, not like the bonded rubber.
