urs4 as ONLY car.

One car, two years, towed twice.
Both times due to failed cooling system hoses. In retrospect, the failures were due to insufficient preventative maintenance on my part.
On the other hand, I've probably missed two weeks of work due to this car. A couple days due to unscheduled maintenance (e.g. my car is full of rainwater) and a few three-day stretches (e.g. fedex the J-hose across the country to be rebuilt, replace all coolant hoses, etc.) for longer jobs. If I had another car I could have spread these jobs out over a few weekends and wouldn't have missed work. But I get 4.5 weeks of vacation a year so it's not a big deal.

One car, five in half years, towed once
The one time was a failed fan clutch. Of the seven Audis I've owned, the Ur-S is by far the most reliable without question. I am proactive with all of the repairs that I know it will be needing. Look for the list of these items that people have mentioned. Remember that these cars are becoming long in the tooth and a car that has been even slightly neglected will most likely need a few repairs to make it reliable.

I guess they had to dump the UFO brakes somewhere. Do you know if the right hand drive S4s were ...

built in SA or in Europe? I understand that for tax reasons Audi has a factory to at least assemble cars in SA. I wondered whether the right hand drive cars for the world were built in SA. Any ideas? (The photo is from a 1994 SA issue of DRIVE that I have that gives some hints at this).

We never got allot of S4s I think they brought in a few so Audi SA could race them
I think and win so much they finally banned AWD.

Its a VW factory actually it currently builds all the VW's for the U.K and Australia except the Passat.
From what I understand the Right hand drive S4's where built in Europe and the ones we got were shipped here disassembled and had final assembly done in the factory here (Seats put in doors put on lights put in and that sort of thing) to get around the local tax law. we have a 45% import tax on cars but if you "Assemble" more than 50% of it here you don't have to pay the tax.
I don't think they have built an Audi here since the late 90's when the new A6 came out all of them are imported. VW gets tax breaks because of all the cars they export.
I know some of the 5 cylinder engines where built here the Eurovans 2.6 was and allot of the diesels are.
Just as a side note there is a good chance your wiring harness was built in SA as well
