I'm trying to scan my car with ross-tech vag-com software and an ebay cable. Brand new computer (got it yesterday). I can hear the injectors clicking etc so it is doing the output tests but when i try to do the measuring blocks it says "controller not responding". Any thoughts?

I built one for myself. They work okay from a real COM port. I would be surprised if they worked correctly from a typical USB RS-232 converter. A lot of these converters don't fully implement the out-of-band signals of a true RS-232 port, some of which are required by the very simple ebay-style cables. There are also timing issues, driver issues, etc. with the USB converters.
It is possible (though by no means assured) that a high quality industrial USB to RS-232 adaptor could work. But they cost as much as the real cable from Ross-tech.
Let me say this: I built my own "dumb" interface at a cost of a few dollars (and a few hours). It works. I paid for the software only. If I did it over again, I'd just buy the whole kit. Why? Because the software you have to use with the homemade (or ebay) interfaces is an old version, and it is copy protected (which is always a PITA). If you buy a newer interface from Ross-tech, you don't have to worry about the copy protection because it's in the cable itself, and you can use the latest version.
