stereo? I did some searching and found some people replaceing the head unit, and keeping the Bose speakers w/resistors or some people just replacing everything but nothing about replacing just the speakers.

I know they have an unusual impedance. I found one post that said 1.2 ohms (2 ohms really). Is that correct? If so there are a fw options out there. Just wondering what people have done.

There are a lot more speakers available that are round. you can mount anything you want in there using MDF and still use the original grills. You just have to do a little fabrication.

Are there benefits to round speakers vs oval?

I think there are just a lot more speaker choices, I think you're choices are limited with 6x9's.
