Link to writeup on Charlie Smith's site below. You also may need an impact hammer to loosen the plug- the pumps I've rebuilt typically did, and my experience is that the impact hammer is less likely to mess up the plug, meaning you'll just need to replace the o-ring.
Some additional notes that aren't in the writeup below:
- I and others have used a bit of high temp grease on the o-ring to keep it from binding while you're tightening the plug.
- There are 2 X plugs on the UrS (and most Audi) pumps- I typically R&R the pump and replace both o-rings, but I've also just replaced the top one with the pump still installed.
I will hopefully finally be R&Ring the PS pump on my 95.5 this weekend, and can post a writeup then- it's been deferred by various other emergencies.

Charlie Smith's archive of x-plug repair writeup

The length 11/16", I think or 10/16", needs to loose about a 16th of an inch in its length to fit in the plug slot better. I had a large screwdriver that I tapped on the plug with a hammer, to assist in breaking the seal free. I allowed my new stealer o-ring to sit in the p.s. fluid for about an hour, prior to installing the new plug and o-ring. When I installed the new plug and o-ring, torque the plug to 37 ft/lbs. I couldn't have torqued it any further, without the socket wanting to round out of the slot.

If the plug contacts the housing - it has nothing to do with a leak - the pump pressure forces the o ring into the seam. If the plug does not contact the housing - it will force the ring through the gap - no matter how small. If the ring is too thick - the plug will not contact the housing. (see results above.)
