IIRC he was replacing 5th and 6th, not 1st (and 3rd?). The problem is...
1st is the one that galls <wildly sweeping generalization that will offend at least one person> BUT it is part of the main shaft, not a separate gear. Changing the main shaft is a relatively major job and not inexpensive.

I've bought mine on ebay for $500 with shipping.
It was stuck in 2nd gear ( 00'S4 ). It took me like 18-20 hours to rebuild. New synchronizers and seals. It runs flawlessly in my A8. The car is 3750lbs and it has 300HP, so the weakest link is the B5 S4 clutch.
