At least, I think that's what happened. While driving today in a rocky slushy muck on Calgary roads suddenly I get the loudest and most annoying screeching squeal from one of my wheels. Even driving at slow speeds sounded like nails on a chalk board. It was actually kinda funny, I was stuck in a packed parking lot with people walking in front of me. So I'd creep forward, then stop, then creep again as people walked. Intermitant screeching. They all started turning around to see what the noise was. :-)

Anyway, just as I was starting to worry what it was and was driving to a mechanic it stopped. I suspect a rock was stuck in the brakes or something, not sure exactly. Could this have done any damage? I inspected the brakes of the wheel in question but don't see anything on the outside. I wonder if the inside of the disc is all scratched.

yup, can get stuck between rotor and dust shield, happened to me

Same here with my WRX, also in one of the back brakes. Took a couple months to finally get out.
