I use a cup holder - phone holder.
I've tried virtually all of them from Amazon, this is probably my favorite.
The black straight bar allows me to get the phone up about 8-10" off the console, and it doesn't bounce around like virtually all of the others.
When I need the cup holder back, I just pull the thing out and put it in the driver's side door.

Yeah this one looks good. In Canada where I am I think it’s around a $500 ticket with a suspension on the next offence for phone infractions. I know if your phone is just sitting in the cup holder that’s a ticket but I figure a holder is a holder regardless of location.

Best one I found was at Walmart. It keeps both my cup holders open since it goes right into the 12V charge port...although depending on how the iPhone is put on the mount, it may block the cups a little bit. If positioned just right, your hand will easily work the phone since it's floating in the air and your arm is supported by the arm rest...I searched all over the internet back then and the one that worked out best for me was at my local Wally's

this is the first one I found that holds in the vent slat and does not "sag"
I keep it on the vent closest to the right of the steering wheel

I ditched the cup holder and mounted to the passenger side dash.
after I get the new iPhone 12 pro max, I’ll swap this out for a magnet mount.
