Finally I got the replacement BSG for my Q8 today after being in the delar for 2 days. The SA told me that the majority of failures were due to overloading of the BSG by auto start/stop system which in turn fried the chips inside the alternator. He said that they updated start/stop software to improve the efficiency of it and that it shouldn't fail prematurely.

No one has a definitive root cause but this theory is the most plausible.

The overwhelming evidence supporting the leading theory is condensation. I disable auto SS for every drive but it is unlikely the cause. The BSG works especially hard during the winter (DC DC step down for 1.5+ hours for each drive) and that heat coupled with the cold temps outside is what is shorting out the internal PCBs.

I've installed this piece of art and it works great. Start/Stop disabled by default.

Well, if that's correct, it might explain why we haven't had the issue yet. Our car goes to Tucson in the winter so has not seen much cold weather. In any event, we get the replacement part next week.

We religiously disabled auto s/s and we're in the south, so our car was never exposed to much cold weather, and the BSG still failed. Honestly, seems like a matter of (bad) luck as much as anything.

Theories about BSG failures are like elbows ie., everybody has one. I reckon the Audi engineers have identified the problem, but the customer will never know. It makes for good forum subject.
