Default Two cell phones....

23 Q8.... so far I really like this car despite the user interface with the MMI.

Anyway, I can not believe in todays day and age with a car of this caliber you can't have the two users of the car both have their phones on and receive or makes calls from the car. Am I doing something wrong?

this isn’t the car this is the protocols involved. a bluetooth device can connect to more than one item, but only one item can perform audio i/o at a time. think about any bluetooth speakers you use. same thing. you can’t have two phones connected making calls or streaming music at the same time.

you can say one phone streams music, while the other takes calls, if i recall correctly.

if ur using airplay you can have one connected via bluetooth and one via airplay. only one can play music or execute a call at a time tho.

please, anybody correct me if i am wrong.

Thomas..... In our BMW we can have both our phones connected to the car via Bluetooth. If either one of us wants to make a call, we simply pick up the phone and make the call. The salesman said we can only pair one phone. Am I misunderstanding what he told me?

in my prior audi, you could only pair 1 phone, and you couldn't even pick a primary, it was just luck of the draw. that was a 2017. this time around, i ended up getting a cayenne, which is still vw group. same platform as the q8 though there are differences. if you go into the screen where it shows all the phones, "connection manager" or whatever it is called, do you see 2 phones connected at once? in the cayenne we can have 2 phone paired, but only one can be used with the audio at a time. i haven't tested to see if each will take calls.

Thomas,

I don't think my S8 limits us to only one car. I say think because I can't recall any time my wife would have been in the car and had to make a call. Her X5 would allow us to have both hers and my cell phones connected at the same time. Obviously only one call at a time, but if one of us needed to make a call you just picked up the phone and called.

Both of those cars have CD players and jukeboxes built in to store music and such we don't really use our phones for a music source. Not having any way to import music in the Q8 was a little bit of a shock. I wonder if we paired the phones but didn't set them up to do music if it would make a difference? I plan on taking a drive into the dealer next week to go over some of the configuration and perhaps we can figure something out then.

Do you pair your phones through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi?

Mike
