Anybody out there driven and R8 and 997 GT3?

Can't answer your question, but 2008 GT3's will likely be as hard to get as R8's. Porsche, in its wisdom, is only producing around 200 of them for the U.S. market in 2008 and they're all spoken for. Knowing Porsche, probably not enough profit margin in them or too many boy-racers are crashing them. If you really want a new GT3 or GT3 RS, be prepared to pay $25K-$50K over sticker
If you're intending to do serious track time, a properly driven GT3 will be very hard for an R8 to match. For street use, I'd choose an R8 or a 997 turbo.

that's why all these magazine editors get such lousy track times with Porsches and find the R8 so good on the track. The R8 (like the mid engine Cayman and Boxster) will be easier for less experienced track drivers to master.
Both the 997 GT3 and 997 Turbo in the hands of someone who know what they're doing (and I don't necessarily mean a pro) are among the most effective cars on most tracks. A guy I know owns a 997GT3 and a 997 Turbo and finds both cars give about the about equivalent results on the tracks he frequents - more technical tracks favor the GT3, high acceleration tracks favor the turbo.
The most ridiculous article to date is the recent Car & Driver - idiots talk about how they have to lift off in the turns because the Lotus gets too squirrelly for them. OMG! No wonder they got such pathetic lap times for the Porsches if they're lifting on them in the corners, as well.

I've had the #1 allocation for a 2008 GT3 from a dealer I like down in Baltimore. Since there are only 107 GT3s for next year and production ends December 31st I may or may not get an allocation unfortunately. No R8s to be had either unfortunately. I'm going to drive a 997 turbo next weekend and may opt for one of those instead. They have a Feb production spot I can spec. Am keeping my fingers crossed for the GT3 allocation but could probably be happy with a turbo. High class problem, I know.
