Is it just me or are dealers living in a dream world.

Re: Yes, but with a limited sample set, all you need is one guy with an almost new Porsche
Actually was up on the Manheim auction website (for those of you who don't know, Manheim was established more than 60 years ago as a wholesale vehicle auction operation. Today, with more than 34,000 employees in 141 operating locations worldwide, Manheim is the world's largest provider of vehicle remarketing services. In 2008, Manheim handled nearly 10 million used vehicles, facilitating transactions representing more than $50 billion in value.) which has one transaction four weeks ago for $117k. Now if a dealer is willing to pay that kind of money for a 2008 with 450 miles on it I would imagine that there is still a strong market for R8s. JMHO

I just read the whole thread, am I missing something........
or has one important detail been overlooked? on your 1st post, the 1st car listed (I assume copy & paste from email) is listed as a 2009 (used - 750mi).
later in the thread, you post your email response to the dealer that a 08' R8 w/ 750 miles is only worth 97K CPO'd (CPO is not available on the R8 IIRC) that they are willing to sell you for 116K and change.
now, I am not trying to discount the value of a 2008 model (I am in agreement with the others here in that regard), however, if the car in question is, in fact a 2009 pre owned, then I believe their price is well justified (in fact, a good deal, esp if you like the color combo). he is offering you a savings of roughly 8K v. a new car.
It also sounds like they are being rather fair on your S8 trade, which would indicate to me (at least on the face of things) that the manner in which they presented themselves (no BS straight shooters) would be accurate.
Of course, you may choose to wait, and with time, like all depreciating assets, the R8 will go down to the 85-95K range, but at what opportunity cost? how long will you have to "go without" in order to get one at your price? you make an excellent point about the RS4's, however it seems most RS models have similar depreciation curves, and one could, at the time (1yr ago) taken a look at how the C5 RS6's had depreciated to get some indication that the RS4 would follow suite. The same still holds true, would you have waited and "denied" yourself the RS4?

At the end of the day, we have to realize, regardless of overall cost, we buy and drive these cars because we like them, hell, love them, and not because it makes financial sense. they are not investments, and granted, we all want to make the savvyest purchase at the time, but at some point, you have to say the hell with it, I WANT IT, write the check grab the keys and go enjoy the car!

sorry, kinda got off on a tangent. I'll get off the soapbox now. just my $.02

well written. Only correction is that the R8 is CPO'd, just explicitly asked last week.
My RS6 depreciation experience tells me that i will have the R8 i want used in a year or two well below 100K (75-80K heck look at Porsche GT2/3s and their drop).
