upgrade the sound by changing or adding an amplifier and changing speakers. Is this possible? I am sure many of you have asked this question, but I am a new owner and I WOULD LOVE TO SEE the psobilities if any. THank you so much

The biggest single improvement you can make is ading a sub, as then you can reduce the bass going to the cabin speakers which will relieve them of a job they're not really capable of doing, and thus get a better sound and superb bass at the same time.

The non-bose setup has a very flaky rear amplifier driving the rear speakers only I think. It forces you to go up in volume in the HU. Now if you had an excellent HU that wouldn't be much of a problem, but what they have in there bose or non-bose is some middle of the road thing.
By adding the aftermarket amp, you improve the overall volume level of the system, which allows (or forces) you to stay <15 range in the HU volume control. The HU amp (you are using it as a pre-amp now) is pretty doable in that range...
So yes the sound will improve somewhat. I'd recommend doing the AMP upgrade first and see if it works for you... If not, hey swap the speakers too...
BTW the Audi A4 sound system is a shame for a 30+K car. It is ridiculously weak. I tried the Bose setup too before I bought my Audi, and you know, it sucks as much as the Monsoon crap did in my Golf days -- overemphasized bass and "muddy" sound overall. I think it's not worth a dime, you are much better off replacing the amp and the speakers yourself.
