Default '08 A4 w/iPod dock: cable to allow hook-up of any device?

I have a 2008 A4 with the Bose stereo and factory-installed iPod. I'm looking for a way to convert the iPod dock into a standard aux cable, so I can hook up any device with a 3.5mm (headphone jack) output. I read somewhere that a simple 30-pin female to 3.5mm cable would do the trick, so I purchased this:
Amazon.com: Audio iPod iPhone input converter to regular MP3 plug - iPod Iphone Female End to 3.5mm Male plug cable: Electronics Amazon.com: Audio iPod iPhone input converter to regular MP3 plug - iPod Iphone Female End to 3.5mm Male plug cable: Electronics
. But when I plugged it in to the car's iPod dock and to my device, and tried to select the iPod dock via the radio, I got the "No CD" message that shows when no iPod is connected. (And then I saw on the product's description page that it specifically doesn't work with factory-installed iPod cables. Oops.)

Any tips? I know one option would be to add a stand-alone aux cable (via the SAT option, I think) but I'm hoping to avoid that if possible.

Also, generally speaking, have folks had good luck with the Dice or Denison kits? I find it kind of crazy that my factory-installed iPod kit only allows me to access a few playlists and doesn't display artist/track/etc.

Thanks for the help.
