Steering controls went out but everything else was fine.A mechanic friend said hold down the volume button and turn the wheel 90 degrees. Now the car won’t start. It kicks over and sometimes starts to idle but rough and then stops! He said it’s the clock spring? Yes no? Any advice?

The engine is going to start and idle just fine even if the whole clock spring was torn to hell. So you probably have an actual engine issue alongside a steering wheel issue. Scan with VCDS and see what the actual codes say is actually going on with the actual car.
