Blown Bose 6.5" Sub - Replace or Upgrade ???

My left deck sub on my '98 A4 recently started "blatting" on low bass. I removed the deck and looked at the speaker. Altho' no tears in the cone are evident, it *sounds* like it has blown.
Questions:
1) Has anyone else blown their Bose subwoofer without a visible tear in the cone?
2) Is it possible that something has come loose in the speaker and is causing the rattle/blatting? Is it fixable by me?
3) A new Bose 6.5" sub from Audi is $135. In your opinion should I just put in the factory Bose speaker, or replace it with something else? If so, any recommendations?
4) I read the faq and it seems like the person who replaced the Bose subs with "butyl woofers" from PartsExpress, used 8 ohm speakers in replacement for the Bose 2 ohm subs. How much of a volume drop? Do I have to replace both speakers at the same time? Or, can I replace just the blown Bose and keep the good one?
Do I have to use 2 ohm for the replacement(s) in either situation?
(from monkeying around with speaker impedences on my guitar amps I know you should always go higher, but never attach lower. So, safety shouldn't be a problem, right?)
And, does anyone have a spare Bose sub (hopefully almost new) for sale? That would be the easiest path of all!
Thanks in advance!
