Default Budget setup for a friend

A friend of mine has a DSM and his speakers are crapping out on him. He showed me these speakers Alpine SPS1700A with this head unit that he already has an Alpine CDA9827 the speakers are 2-40watt with a peak of 200watt the HU is 18watt RMS with a peak of 50. Would these sound ok?? I suggested that he even get a small amp beacuse it would help and theyre cheap.

He posted this on DSM tuners and someone is telling him he'll blow his speakers even without the amp because theres "too much power". I'm no audio guru but that seems kinda silly with the peak of the HU(50) being so much lower than the peak of the speakers(200) heres the thread from DSM Tuners

If you would like to make any suggestions feel free keep in mind hes on a budget...oh and mounting size is 6 3/4

Default it is true that under powering a speaker can cause damage but the set up that you described

is fine, it would be bad if you tried to run a 1000RMS 15 inch sub with a 100RMS amp the load of the Sub would be to much and damage the voice coil.
so no the Alpine set up is fine and will sound real good

Default I know it would be a good idea to run new wires

but with 40watts is it necessary??

Default You won't blow those speakers with that headunit

I had a similar Alpine HU (MP3, BassEngine, etc) and I liked it. Don't know anything about how the speakers sound, though.
