Default Building a sub enclosure....advice

I recently bought a 10" sub (DLS MW110). Now I need to get myself started on my enclosure. Just for reference I have 2.8 A6 sedan.

I really wanted to keep the sub hidden as much as possible to conserve trunk space. So I concluded that I was going to build a fiberglass enclosure. Planning to put it in the "cubby" on the left side of the trunk (where tool kit and cd changer would be)

Through my research on fiberglass enclosures I found that there are a few different ways that they can be made.

Should I just go with an MDF ring or should i make a complete MDF panel and then fiberglass the back?

I have seen alot of pictures that have the actual sub covered. Looks almost as if they are carpeted seperately from the box. This is definately something that would be worth it for the protection of the sub in a "used" trunk.
I looked online and was unable to find anything that explains how this was accomplished. Does anyone know where more information could be found on this?

Less related to the specific enclosure construction: does anyone know the recommended sealed enclosure volume for my sub (MW110). Everywhere I looked online just said that vented was recomended and failed to list a sealed volume.

Thanks in advance

Default You can take a look at mine...

I don't know exactly what you need, but you can take a look at what I've made for my S4. The sub that I've got is only 10", but it's a beast.... a sealed box is right for me, but maybe not you... I don't know. This was the first box I've ever made and it's been great so far.

http://www.proportable.com/storage/jodea/images/s4.htm</a

Default This may help!!!!! my first enclosure attempt, sounded good!

this is how i did my first space saver sub box. i used a 12" jbl which used 1cu ft of air space (you will need 0.8 cu ft thereabouts) work out volume in litres, will explain later

tape off area required and brush on some resin car polish (autoglym ect) to prevent fibreglass sticking but only lightly.

get some f/glass woven matting/resin/hardner.
cut into workable strips and mix resin and hardner (goes off quick so mix small amounts at a time) place matting over taped area and dab resin over f/glass with brush untill soaked in and held in place. repeat this procedure until you have 3-5 layers, more is better for strengh.

make the mould/shape larger then you need, this allows you to trim down to size rather than add.

once dry prise out carefully and this is where the polish comes to use! the polish should prevent the mould sticking to your tape but more importantly your carpet, any tape left on the mould can be easily removed.

i used a MDF baffle board the house the sub to give a good secure fix, this was attached to the mould by bonding in some MDF block on the inside to screw into later.

b4 you make the top you need correct size. check your sub requirments or similar. usually 0.8 cu ft for a sealed 10". get the "litre volume" and because you now have a complex shape to try and calculate i simply filled with water using a "plastic litre jug" and counting the required amount. good for checking leaks too!!!

"do not get MDF blocks wet"
do this b4 you attach any MDF blocks but allow a little extra for sub displacement and any brace you may put in to strenghten.

as you can see i had to raise the sub area to allow for this, oops!!!

drill and screw top to the blocks on the inside then seal, i used car body filler as you can follow the contour inside with your finger (use rubber gloves)also seal outside joint too!

final seal: i sealed the whole inside again with more f/glass resin.

carpet/vinyl/leather or paint finish. the good thing is you only have to trim/paint the top as the rest is hidden.

hope this helps!

then i went on to be more creative, look!!!!!

Default Thanks...

I see you used a full MDF panel...I think that is what I will end up doin just because my trunk is used alot. Did you use any polyfill?

Im already loosing some space from amp..gonna suspend(right side up) from roof of trunk.

Just want to be able to protect the actual "cone"(not sure if im using right word). So that when I put stuff in the trunk I dont really have to worry about puncturing anything.

Default I throw stuff in my trunk all the time and never had a problem with damaging the sub.

I play baseball and softball about 3 times a week and throw all my equipment back there, golf bags go in there as well as a crap load of packages for when the gf goes shopping.

Default I'm too careless and hence too cautious....

Im more worried about like road trips where its "packed" back there. Just dont want to have to worry about anything touching it.

I'm really over cautious....just dont want to have any doubts my sub will be safe.

Default Unless you've got bowling ***** rolling around or sharp objects sticking out,

I think you'll be fine. Plus, if you damage one, that's just an excuse to try something new!

Default Re: Thanks...

if suspending the amp from the under side of the trunk make sure it has ventilation. as for polyfill, if you mean fibre fill (pillow stuffing) then yes, this just dampens it down and fools it into being a bit larger.

as for grill. i eventually fitted a standard rigid black mesh grill from any electrical music store. same as they fit to guitar amps.
