My son have brouught a 12" subwoofer and have folowed the recomendation of the spec sheet and have brought a 1 cubic foot. He did'nt like the sound of it so he emailed cerwin about that and they told him to buy a 2.25 cu ft with a 4" diameter port and 10.5" long. Is it a DIY job and easy or he have to buy one costum made. How much do you think this box could cost: 1.Home made? 2.Costum made by a pro? a basic one.

The port can be purchased prefab and then it just fits into the box. Figure 2.25cu ft dimensions on paper and build a basic rectangular box. Very simple.

It may be worth paying a pro ~$100-150 (it shouldn't cost anymore to have the box built. Ported boxes can be much more trickier to get right than a basic sealed box.

Its not that hard, and there are lots of places to get the ports from. You already know the correct box size, so if you're comfortable with a circ saw and a tape measure, go for it.

The dificulty depends on you ... A square box is simple to construct, rectangle slightly more difficult and a custom enclosure to fit in a specific location muh more dificult.

Make it as easy on yourself as possible. Measure how high it can possibly be in the trunk (and ensure that will fit throught the opening ... dont ask how I found this one out when I was 15). Then decide how long and wide you want it. Typically keep the width the same as the 60 portion of a 60/40 rear split seat to mainting some functionality of the trunk when installed. Then calculate the depth depending on the interior volume you are after once you know height and width. The cut, use glue and naile to get a good seal on every joint. run silicone in every internal corner and dropin the sub.

The port is easy ... get a hardware store to cut it for you and cut a hole and insert it. If you can place the port in a spot on the box that faces an open, or minimally restriced area of the package shelf (some remove rear speakers to run ports into their car). That ensures the bass gets into the car clean. If the shelf is solid then face the port toward the rear of the car to ensure unrestricted air flow.

My son will probably do it by is self, he had an estimate of the price by a pro that do ported sub box a couple of minutes ago and it was way over his budget: $200 CND!!! By his self, less than a hundred! I have one more question, is it possible to paint the box instead of buying more expensive carpet?

Evreything is already instaled, 3 weeks ago by a professional, see the pic of his instal. It took an hour and $75 CND. It seem to be a good job. But the instalator strongly suggested to buy a bigger box, so... he is there now.
As for my other question, for the port, can he use a PVC tube? or he have to buy a real port from an electronic shop.

You could use a specially designed port, but it's not necessary (though some have flared ends to reduce port noise while others are flexible to fit in small or irregularly shaped boxes which would prevent a straight port from working). PVC tubing is perfectly fine for a do-it-yourself job, and would most likely be the same stuff that the shop would use if you had the box professionaly built. Also keep in mind that a port doesn't need to be a round tube at all, it can be a rectangular duct built into the box.
