put a seperate yellow top battery in the trunk for this so I now have 2 batteries. I *think* the ground for the battery in the trunk is fine. All paint removed and it's right into the body of the car. But I have the amp grounded on the negative post of the battery, would that cause too much stress on the battery for whatever reason? I if I request any decent amount of volume the amp shuts down due to low voltage. I read the manual and it's because it has gone below 8 volts. I know a cap is a good addition, but before doing that I would like to investigate this further. opinions? I also have a JL 450/4 running as well.

Is your second battery pulling current from your alternator, or is it just "there." That battery needs to be constantly charged just like the battery that powers the rest of your car. Also, hooking up 2 batteries to one alternator might not be a great idea. Your stock alt is meant to charge your stock batt and nothing else. It is doubtful that a poor ground would cause such massive voltage drops. A cap would certainly help, but again, a cap is pretty much just a band-aid for a bad or misused alt. Sorry if this question strikes you as dumb.

2nd battery installs. This was about 6 years ago though. What would you recommend for keeping the 2nd battery charged? I don't want to put an upgraded alternator on a warantied car. It did strike me as odd though when the guy said all I would need is the second battery. So to answer your question, yes it is pulling from the OEM alt. He even said he owned an A6 and it would be fine blah blah blah. So yeah, what would you suggest for keeping that 2nd battery charged? thanks.

Much easier & cleaner to uprate the existing battery if it is not up to the job, get a high spec'd one for a Diesel.

I'm not totally sure on how to hook up two batteries but I'm pretty sure I've seen it done without a high output alternator before. Does this only happen when the car is off and after a good amount of run time or is it when the car is on too. If it's happening with the car on, something is wrong.

to find your problem you need to eliminate all other issues.
1. disconnect your second battery and connect 1000/1 amp to standard battery. does it still happen?
2. are you using the auto turn on connector on the amp if so that could be the problem, switch to regular turn on and try again
good luck
