CD issues

Hi, I've been on various sections of the forum for a long time, but never posted on this section. I know most people are into MP3 and something called a phat box, but hoping someone can help me with my CD.
I've just purchased a 98 A8. (My other current car is a 99 A6). The CD player in the trunk of the A8 is different from the A6. The A6 has a cartridge with 6 slots. The unit in my A6 is like the picture in the manuals of both cars.
In the A8, the unit is different and the cartridge has 10 slots. Could this be an aftermarket?
The CDs will play but to hear them I have to turn volume to max and then is it only barely audible. There is also a clicking noise.
Any ideas or suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

There are only Panasonic, Sony or Alpine that can easily be fitted to the stock HU with a simple wiring adapter. 10 discs aren't supported by the HU (you can only access 6, to get to disc 7 you have to skip to the last track on disc 6 and wait until it automatically selects the next disc), so it cannot be a stock unit. Have a look at the connection in the trunk, it should just be a round 8 pin DIN type plug, that plugs straight into the lead coming off the changer, nothing in between. If it isn't, or there is a spare lead then it's definately aftermarket.
Is there no make/logo on the changer?
The stock units are Matsu****a/Panasonic or Blaupunkt depending on year.
I'd just buy a stock changer off ebay, as some of the aftermarket interfaces are not that good, had interference issues with them in the past, but never a low volume.

Hi, I was on ebay and found a Panasonic DP601 6 changer that came out of a same year VW. It has the 8 pin connector.
I went on crutchfield hoping to find a compatibility listing, but they only do that for current models that they sell.
Any way of knowing whether it will fit the A8? Thanks again.

And as no one seems to do an adapter for the older 8 pin units it would seem to suggest they are not compatible.
