Cheaped out and not happy

I have a '96 A4 with the stock delta radio. I wasn't willing to drop the $830 Canadian on the Audi 6 disc changer, so I bought a Pioneer 6 disc with FM-modulation for $389. I thought the worst it could sound like is any FM radio station with a great signal. Not as good as true CD, but acceptable. Well it's actually worse than FM. I believe the signal is too strong for the deck, and it's somewhat distorted/scratchy on high frequency sounds.
So if you were thinking about going this route, don't bother. Either pay the bucks for the Audi changer, or go completely aftermarket.
BTW, has anyone used the stock rear speakers without using the built in AMP on drivers side speaker? That is, put in a aftermarket deck and used all the stock speakers?

with modestly good results. I think a good aftermarket deck will offer some improvement on non-Bose models. Eventually, you'll want to replace the speakers with better quality speakers...which may in turn necessitate a better quality outboard amp...funny how this all works...more more more!!! :-)
