Default Eclipse -- 50wx4 vs 85wx4....How much is enough?

I'm looking at two amps....Eclipse 3422 and 5422. I can get the 3422 for $225 and the 5422 for $350. The price difference is significant (~$125), but I don't want to buy twice. This will drive my stock non-bose speakers for now, and possibly better components in the future. I'm not looking for earth-shattering volume, but I'd like to be able to turn it up now and then. Will 50wx4 be enough once I upgrade the speakers or should I spend more now? What about my amp choice? Any other recommendations?

Thanks

Default well...

I would get a more powerful amp first, but I don't know how well it would work on stock speakers. Do you know the ohm rating of the stockers? Even if they match up ohm wise I doubt they could handle that kind of power very long.

Eclipse makes nice amps and they are also a lot of others that are more than capable and of high quality. And I mean A LOT!

Default Ran a JL 300/4 to the stock NON-BOSE speakers

and was somewhat surprised with the results, get the stronger amp u can always turn the gain down. Are those numbers teh RMS or the peak rateings?

Default The numbers are RMS...

And I went out to Tweeter yesterday and listened to a 50wx2 Eclipse amp. I closed the door and turned it up on a pair of 6.5 MB Quarts w/ a 10w0. It was nice, but it did distort quite a lot once I turned the volume up. So I'm most likely going to get the 85x4 one and turn the gain down as you suggested.

Re. the stock speakers, that's exactly what I heard here from some people. Did you put all your speakers on the JL amp?

Default yes i put all the stock speakers on the JL amp, that was

before i eventually swapped them all out but for the time that they were on the amp you will be plesently surprised at how well it handles the power.
