Default electronic crossover vs. using the ones in the amp?

any benefit to external crossovers to divide the signal vs. just running a full signal to each amp and letting the amps crossover do the work?

simple system...4 channel amp running 2 sets of components and 1 mono sub amp.

Amps are of pretty good quality - jl audio 300/4 and mtx class d mono sub amp.

Default Just more flexibility

i.e. you can run 4 component speakers (8 speakers) off a 4 channel amp. Using the amps Xover you'd need a channel for each individual component.

your jl amp has a great crossover network for your purpose i don't know the mtx but they are a quality company outboard xovers may add flexibility but anytime you add a component you increase the possibility of noise i would use them as a last resort

Default sometimes it's hard to get multi amp internal crossovers to mesh up well

they may have different octave slopes, and the controls are usually rather imprecise.

However, if your amp has a signal output from it's cross over, you should be just fine. That's the way mine is set up.

Default Flexibility of changing the equalization of the audio signal.

I run a Audiocontrol EQX (Equalizer and X-over)running into a 2 and 4 ch Fosgate Amps. The EQX allows me to adjust each frequency and match to the octaves for signals properly routing them to the appropriate source. It also allows the adjustment of Sub/Mid/Hi frequencies after the head unit so that I can keep basic settings on the EQX and give simple tuning between songs that have too much bass or too little bass at the head unit.

Hope this helps.
