I'm new to Audi World and Audi forum...so sorry if I'm asking the same questions. I have an 1.8tq 02 and just installed Diamond Hex separates, Arc Audio amp and a sub. Sounds awesome, but there's an engine noise coming through the speakers. I have the factory head unit that I want to keep, plus I'm out of dough to switch with an after market one anyway. Anyone have suggestions on how to solve this problem? The experts at La Jolla Audio tried all day today and I'm still not satisfied. After driving away and putting some power (and time) to the system...the noise has gotten worse. They tried a filter from the battery to the amp...but I can still hear it. If anyone has suggestions or can point me in the right direction, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks.

Also check that no RCA cables are running next to power or ground cables.
Using any kind of high level to low level adapter is an invitation for noise, so you may in fact be stuck until you can afford a new HU.

well i dont mean to bad mouth the other 2 previous posts but... Its not the amp.. and 9/10 times its not the cables... im guessing you ran the RCA's along with the factory loom along the top part of the carpet, basically you are getting signal interference from the other running electrical stuff running through the power cords

I fought with this problem for about 2 years with my installer with no success until recently.
About a year ago I installed a line driver to double the output of the stock head unit (which is really really low and picks up noise easily). This helped dramtically by allowing a stronger signal to fend off the noise on it's way to the amp in the trunk, but I still had some noise left.
I took matters into my own hands and started playing around with the back of the head unit. And I found it!! Appartently the wire placement of the RCA outs is very VERY sensitve right in the area behind the head unit. I was pull the head unit out part-way and move the wires around while the car was running. I could hear a big change in engine whine as I moved the wires. So after many trial-and-errors I was able to find a spot that was good and didn't pick up any noise. Now it's great -- no noise or whine.
Good luck.
