Default Fake faceplate ideas - think this can be done...?

Howdy. Alright heres what im thinking. If it sounds really stupid, then ok, its just an idea. Anyways I bought a Pioneer DEH-P7200, and after being inspired by Mark P (as usual), I thought it would be cool to take the face from the Audi head unit, the Symphony one, and somehow put it on the back of the Pioneer, so that when it rotates to shut off (which I think it does....not sure), you see the Symphony faceplate, and car thieves are fooled! This would only work if 1) the Pioneer flips around to show a blank face when turned off, and 2) I can fit the old Symphony on the blank face. Get it? Or maybe just have the Pioneer head unit recessed a little and have the Symphony faceplate fold down on springs so when you turn the car on, the Pioneer comes out like an inch, pushes down the fake Symphony one, and you can use the radio. Or else you can just fold down the fake one and have it click to stay down or something. Can it be done!?
~Mike

Default The only motorized flip around face I know of is....

the Kenwood. Unless something else just came out, the Kenwood is the only one that actually rotates 180 degrees to show a blank face when not in use. All the others just flip down to open up, but they don't rotate 180 degrees.

As for integrating the front of the Audi face plate into the back of the aftermarket unit, like the Kenwood... well, there are precice clearances so it probably won't work. When it rotates it has to clear the edges by just a gnat hair.... adding any thickness to it will cause it to crash. Plus, there would be no room behind it when it is in the (in use) mode. The back of the blank face butts up against the inside of the cd player. (make sense?) However if you are REALLY hell bent on the idea, maybe you could somewhow take a digital photo of the Audi unit, transfer it to a printout (one-to one scale) and glue the picture to the back of the blank face. It'll maybe fool an ameture at night.

Default Anything can be done if you find the right person and have the money, however NO!

it can not be done. That is, the Symphony is the '00+ double DIN stereo - I believe you are talking about the Concert (98-99.5?) stereo.

You wouldn't be able to "fit" the Audi radio on the back of the face due to thickness - perhaps you could have a sign shop make you a custom sticker of the Audi radio that you could stick the back of the face.

How can you be this close to buying the Pioneer unit and not know that it does (or does not) flip around? Maybe I just do too much research before my purchases.

I have seen fake fronts where the aftermarket unit moves forward when activated. $$$. Though, most fake fronts need to be manually removed

The easiest solution may be to take the front of the Audi radio and gut it such that it fits *over* your aftermarket unit. The face is about 5/8" thick/deep, which should be sufficient for most applications. Even though it won't be flush, it'll still be a good deterant (assuming the rest looks basically stock)

good luck

ps I responed below about stuff for your install
Mark P

Yes I was talking about the Concert face, I have a 98.5 but was reading about the Symphony in the FAQs so I had it stuck in my head. I'll try to go with fitting it over the Pioneer face.

As for not knowing whether it turns 180 degrees, the Pioneer and Crutchfield sites do not specifically say anything about whether it flips around. And besides to me that wasn't a major factor in choosing a head unit.

PS I responded to your response below.
~Mike
