Default Finally, finished last night around 1AM, custom fibreglass enclosure:

This is my custom made fibreglass enclosure. I wanted something that was not going to take up much trunk space, and still sound decent, at a relatively low cost. Mind you, it is not going to win any SPL competitions, but it is just the extra "kick" that the factory Audi concert system needed right from the factory.
I have seen others make enclosures for the left side of the trunk, but I did not want to move the CD-changer and jack out of there.

After removing the right side trunk liner, it was covered with wide masking tape, to prevent the fibreglass resin from coming in contact with the carpet on the liner, and likely ruining it.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/40679/im000175.jpg">

I used fibreglass mat, because it was given to me for free. Fibreglass cloth would be a more suited product for this application, since there are many corners that the fibreglass needs to be contoured to fit. The cloth is much more flexible and lends well to being contoured into varying shapes.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/40679/im000180.jpg">

I used about 3 litres, around ¾ of a gallon of fibreglass resin. Always mix the amount you will need right away, and not any extra. Mix it in very small amounts, as it will harder very quickly. Leave the sides longer then needed so that they can be properly trimmed afterwards. I left an extra 2 inches all the way around.

The walls of the enclosure were built-up to a thickness of approximately ¼ of an inch all the way around. I let it sit for a couple of days to let it harden. After that, I "peeled" it out of the trunk liner, without any problems. I then re-installed the trunk liner back in the car.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/40679/im000183.jpg">

I measured the depth needed and cut the box and used a hacksaw to carefully saw it.
After that, it was off to the belt sander, for some trimming and smoothing.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/40679/im000182.jpg">

I filled the box with water to measure the volume. The sub I used required .6 cu. Ft of enclosure volume. The box measures around 12.5 litres, or roughly ½ cubic foot.. It is a little small, but still ok.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/40679/im000184.jpg">

For the front, I used a High-density fibre board about ¾ inch thick. I placed the fibreglass ox on top of the board and traced it. After cutting it with a Jig saw, the sides were sanded and test-fit a number of times, to ensure that it fit nicely, and there were no major air gaps.

The front was cut to fit inside the fibreglass enclosure, and I used a very flexible sub-floor adhesive to hold the front on to the fibreglass. Screws were placed in the sides of the fibreglass to properly hold the front of the box in place.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/40679/im000193.jpg">

The box was then carpeted all the way around, and is held in place with a large strip of Velcro, glued on the box. The carpet on the trunk liner is excellent for the Velcro to "stick" to. It is so good that I nearly cracked the trunk liner trying to pull the box out after initially installing it.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/40679/im000199.jpg">

The sub is a run-of-the mill Pioneer TS-W29C 10", and is powered by an Alpine V-12 2 channel amp. I am using the factory low-level inputs at the rear left speaker connector. Power comes directly from under the dash, at connector 30 (large red wire). I used this location for power because I am only running one small amplifier, and one subwoofer.

<img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/40679/im000200.jpg">

The sub sounds adequate, and I chose it because I bought one of the first 12" IMPP Pioneer subs ten years ago, in 1993, and abused it for at least 8 of those years, in different cars, and enclosures, including a sixth-order band-pass box, without it ever failing. It still works to this day, although the box it's in would take up ¾ of the Audi's trunk. They're not the best, but they do last!

That's it, just thought I would share this experience. Thanks for looking!

Default Nice work!

I plan on doing that someday. I'm gonna do it in the same spot cause I don't want to mess with the factory changer also.

I wonder if a 12" will fit right there. Looks kinda tight.

Btw, I also got some pioneer subs from about 7 years ago. They held up nicely. I put them (2 12") in the trunk about a week ago just for fun. Left over from my high school days. Its overkill and takes way too much space. But they still bump!

Default A 12" won't go in there. I don't know if you can tell, but the sides of the sub are sticking out ...

past the edges of the enclosure. another problem is that there won't be enough volume for the 12" sub to work in. I only managed to get about 1/2 cubic foot volume in there.

Nice DIY installation! Get a grill on there to protect the sub from loose trunk objects, though.
