I just purchased an 01 a4 avant quattro and know nothing about the audio system. I've done alot of installs but none in a german car. The features list says my car is supposed to have a sub but I don't see one anywhere. I also don't see a factory amp anywhere.
Any help would be nice
I have the Symphony head unit and I don't know how to tell if it is bose or not

On the B6 Avant (01-04) the sub and amp is in the rear right cubbyhole (yes that's right the thing that looks like a tupperware box). The amp drives the sub & rear speakers (non Bose).
If you have the Bose system the HU should display Bose when you turn it on, and also the sub/amp will have the Bose logo.
The Bose system has 2 amps one for the sub and a 4ch one for all cabin speakers.

a) if you are just adding an amp for a sub...then get it from the amp in the passenger trunk area (it's hidden above the rear passenger side wheel well)...even the bose amp is located there too.
b) if you are adding an amp to power all the new speakers (sub included), then it is easiest to add an OEM line out converter behind the Sym II head unit. This will get you two sets of RCA's and a remote lead. Just make sure to have your Sym I recoded for Bose so you eliminate all passive speakers (i.e. the fronts).
See my sig for the link to my nav+ install pix for background. The blaupunkt line out connector/wires runs about $20 from midwestelectronics.com
Make sense?
Good luck!

PS: this question comes up on a weekly basis. Search this forum ("preamp") and you see pix that I've posted...etc...etc.
