I read the tech article and I do not like that setup where you splice the wires, and would not recommend running power wires through your ECU either. But I just ordered an AMP and SUB from Crutchfield, but do not know how to install it. Please help all you audiphiles!!! THANKS. How has everyone else installed there subs? I ordered one 12" sub for the trunk.

they are nice and neat and are fairly clean looking.
personally I did run the power wire thru the ECU box. i regret it even though i have not yet experienced any problems related to this.
get a coat hangar and use elec. tape to attach some speaker wire to the end. then drill your hole for the power wire, put in a grommet, and use the hangar to snake the cables through.
as for tapping into the sound, you're either gonna have to use wire taps, or you need to make an adaptor for the factory harness at the back of the radio.

i went to Audi parts and ordered the wiring harness housing for the back of the radio.
then i went to 4 other dealerships looking for the gold-plated wire connectors that they're not supposed to sell me.
i got some high-quality RCA connectors and wire, and wired them into the housing (twice, be careful to make your adaptor flexible, or you'll ruin it when you try to put it in the car)
so now, i have the LINE OUT pins on the back of the radio feeding a sony 505 crossover (>$300). it allows me to connect (via RCA cables) amplifiers and give me control of:
subwoofer volume & crossover point
independant front and rear levels
hi-pass frequency
to boot, it also serves as a pre amp (boosting the volume a bit)
and the fader **** on the deck still work.
it would be alot easier if audi put RCA plugs on the back of their radios.
