Curious how important it is to have a cap in a system.
I am hooking up a 250 mono ch amp to power one 12" sub as well as a 300 4 ch amp for the rest of the speakers.

A cap is a nice thing to have. Is it needed? You can get by without it, but it will improve your sub performance. The cap stores up extra power so it's on tap when the sub draws more. The battery in your car isn't able to do that effectively since it has to store up enough juice so that the other electronics in your car have it when they need it. Rule of thumb is 1 farad for every 500 watts. You'd only have to worry about one for your sub amp.
