one more question:
when i settle on a solution, should i try and find the cheapest components (i.e. look for the amp, speakers, adaptors online) and bring them to get installed. or should i just assume that a reputable shop will give me a decent deal in order to get me to buy all materials through them.
thanks to the forum, i have found some pretty good deals online, but i would hate to frustrate the installer and have them do a bad job. not to mention have an installer refuse to use any parts i already own.
thanks again for all the comments.<p>mark s

The installers are more familiar with the product and how to obtain the best sound from it.
If there is a problem with any of the components during or after the install, the shop should have spare stock on hand to help you out.
Don't forget, these guys are running a business. They count on making money on the install, and on the components. Some shops will even flat out refuse to install components they haven't sold you. That doesn't mean you can't "talk" about the price, and knock them down a bit, but don't expect anything near what soundhabit offers.
It's like anything else. If I know what I want, and don't need any help, I'll buy from the internet and save a few bucks. If I need assistance (or believe I will in the future), I will patronize a local store and pay a little more for the service.

I just had a stereo installed at Sound In Motion, here in Boston, in my '01 S4.
We decided on Focal 165 K2P's in front kick panel's. Sound awesome but very expensive custom work.............
Kick panel's do make a huge difference vs. door mounts in my opinion.
