Default IL: Install an original 10" MMI screen in an Audi A4 2018 (with 8.25" screen

Hey everyone,
I have an A4 Quattro 2018 with a 8.25” MMI screen. It's rather small, I'd like to install a new bigger screen but would rather not having one of those Android based retrofits. I can get an original 10" MMI screen from a newer Audi A4, what do I need to do to get something like this done? would it even work? am not interested in the touch screen functionality, I just want a bigger screen. Couldn't find a clear answer on this in the forums, specifically addressing using just the screen for a screen as opposed to also having the touch capability.

From the pictures it looks like the connector at least is identical and its really just a screen so at least in theory it is possible but I understand it not so simple.

Research of part numbers for MMI screens in the A4 series yielded the following:
8W0919604 7” Alpine
8W0919604A 7” Alpine

8W1919604 7” InnoLux

8W0919605 8.25” Alpine
8W1919605 8.25" InnoLux

8W0919620 10.1" InnoLux
8W1919620 10.1" Alpine
8W1919620A 10.1" Alpine

8W2919620 10.1" InnoLux

Any advice on the above will be appreciated.

Thanks!

Have you managed to make the upgrade? I'm interested in upgrading, too.

I saw that thread, but my understanding was that he made the upgrade from a 8.2 inch screen. The link to the Aliexpress screen decoder also mentions that is from a 8.2 to 10.1 screen. I was curios if anyone with a 7 inch screen managed to do the upgrade successfully?

C7.5 A6/A7 use:
8" is MIB2 High, 800x480

4M Q7 and B9.0 use:
7" is MIB2 Standard (MMI Radio+), 800x480
7" is MIB2 Scale (MMI Radio+ w/Conn Pkg; MMI Nav), 800x480
8.3" is MIB2 High (MMI Nav+), 1024x480

B9.5 use:
10.1" is MIB3 High, 1540x720 touch

So the 8.3 and 10.1 are both High units and the same aspect ratio. Putting a High screen on a Standard or Scale unit, it'll be up to the third-party intermediate device (scaler) to handle the in and out specs.

But you should look at the threads already on the subject in the B9 A4 and B9 A5 forums. They probably address 7" at some point there.

I've asked the seller from AliExpress if it's compatible and he answered: "yes, it is compatible" "place the order", which I find a bit aggressive . I don't really want to end up with a distorted image on the screen. My current MIB unit is MHS2 (the one with navi included).

I made a mistake in my original post, my screen is 8.25”. I don’t think it its possible to do with a 7” screen because the multimedia system that comes with the 7” is not compatible.

MSTD - MIB standard - 5.8" 400x240
MHIG - MIB high - 7" 800x480

MST2 - MIB2 standard - 7" 800x480
MHS2 - MIB2 scale - 7" 800x480
MHI2 - MIB2 high - 8.25" 1024x480

For MIB3, Scale was dropped and a new top end Premium level was introduced.

MIB3 basic - 8.8" 1280x720 touch
MIB3 high - 10.1" 1540x720 touch
MIB3 premium - 10.1" 1540x720 touch

The B9 MIB3 offerings do not include the 8.8" option; that's on the VW clones (A1/A3/...)

https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804015629628.html
But I'd want the product documentation first to confirm settings supporting 7" input > 10.1" output
With the screen: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256802455414852.html

It's just an LVDS video signal, so as long as the scaler scales and puts bars on the side, such as a 16:9 image on a 21:9 monitor, rather than doing a stretching to the edges in both directions, should be fine. But what will the little blue box actually do?

But https://rsnav.com/collections/s3-and...5-pre-facelift might be a better use of money. :-) If you can wait out the delay. Or $100 more for the 12.3" version.

I used to have an Android unit in my old car, but it was quite slow and it had some antenna interferences when listening to radio. It's true that it was not the most expensive one, but for some reason that made me a little hesitant when going with an Android unit again. Is the RSNAV good? I don't want to end up with something that glitches a lot or takes a long time to boot when starting the car.

RSNAV is considered the go to for modernizing the infotainment system in an Audi. If it sucked, it wouldn't have more recommendations and discussion than any other solution option. I wouldn't call it necessary for MIB2, compared to older B8 infotainment systems. But for the same money, you might as well get more for your money if you're dropping that kind of coin. The only concern might be the time to delivery, as they are popular now at the same time China sourcing keeps getting slower. If the simple screen/scaler solution was half the price, I'd just do that. But almost $900?
