But you need the Changer installed to do it, Right?...
...the head unit apparently needs to believe that
it's talking to a CDC or it won't let you switch to that set of inputs.

I've got a possible solution....
I ordered an MP3 player from a company called Duosette. What's unusal about this MP3 player is that it is shaped like a cassette tape so that you can insert it directly into your tape player. It works just like the cassette adapters you can use to play your MP3/CD/etc. player through your car's stereo. What's also nice about it is that you can control it with your tape transport controls. So if you want to skip to the next song all you do push the fast forward button or press the reverse button to go backwards a song. You can't search through the song though.
The unit I ordered is a new 64 MB (can be expanded to 128 MB) version that is supposed to be available at the end of February. It was about $250, which is basically on par with with other similar players. You also can also use it as a normal portable player it with a pair of earphones. This thing might not be for everyone, but I really like the fact that it integrates quite nicely with the stock head unit without having to cut wires or install switch boxes. I rarely use my tape player, so this MP3 player is a pretty nice deal in my opinion.

Another idea..
They make adapters that plug into your antenna, then you can tune to a specific station, and it will play whatever is plugged into it. It's basically the same thing that add-on changers use for decks w/o changer control.
You may need some sort of adapter to get it to work with the audi antenna.
Crutchfield carries them, so I'm sure other places do as well.
