I have a '00 TT coupe with the Bose 180watt system. The system definitely has impressive bass for no factory subwoofer, however it's boomy and the midrange is weak. Seems like the sound is a mixture of heavy bass and crackling highs.
Anyway, I've heard the head units are decent, so I was thinking of attacking this problem at the speakers. First step I was thinking was to replace the 4 doorspeakers.
Does this sound sensible? Any brands I should consider? I'll spend say $300-400, but didn't want to go to much more than that.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Someone else here did that and found their speakers didn't sound the way they thought because the Bose system runs out of phase and the speakers are designed for it. You can upgrade but I would suggest doing an entire amp, speaker upgrade. There may be a section on this in the Tech under electronics.

I think most Bose systems are 16 ohm speakers. Aftermarket are 4 ohm plus Bose EQ's everything all crazy to make their 4 dollar speakers sound good.
