Improving sub sound quality

two questions:
1. Ive heard that creating a hole in the back seat (similar to the ski pass though will help my sub vent into the cabin. I have it in a passat with no speakers on the rear deck to remove. Is this true? If so how much would it cost to have that done?
2. I think part of my disastisfaction with the sound comes from the fact that the sub is trying to play frequencies that are too low for it. Could i add a high pass filter also to help cut off the low end bass? Would a new EQ/crossover for the whole system help?
PS. My system in the one listed under the Passat in my sig.

or you have you amp adjusted or wired far to wrong. certain size subs dont play certain frequencies well. my tens don't hit real low (cuz they are 10's) But lack of sound and bad quality are 2 different animals. Can you post or send me a pic of your amp that powering the sub and what the controls are set at? Also what size sub do you have and what kind of box is it in? (bandpass, ported, sealed)
