Both in a properly sized sealed box.

simple matter of physics, the 12 will push more air than the 8.

Default i dissagree...

ahh but the 8w7 has more throw and is more efficient, also a little bit quicker, it would be close db wise

Default Multiply piston area (Sd) by one way linear excursion (xmax) and you get

28.5 cubic inches of air pushed by the 8w7 and 37.7345 cubic inches pushed by the 12w3. So the 12w3 pushes more air. Also, sensitivity (at 1w per meter outside of an enclosure) has little baring at 250 watts in a box. Beyond that, the longer the throw, the longer it takes to accomplish a stroke, so the 12 might even be quicker and cleaner sounding.

Default Can the 8w7 even take 500w rms?

and remember that JL tends to lowball their ratings....at least, i am almost certain my 300/4 and 250/1 have to be putting out more than advertised

xmax x sd = thatll be the best way to figure output, good call audi -o - phile. I agree with his post. also as far as sound/spl its all gonna sound so different with going from an 8 to a 12. If your looking for lows, bigger will generally give you lower freq......but enclosures and so on will all factor into that. its really not comparing 1x1.....good luck....

get a 10w6 and call it a day

Why a 8w7 rather than say a 10w7 or a 12w6v2, etc?

Default It's not just about pushing air. JL's W7 series will have less distortion at xmax

I'm not sure why he's comparing a 8" woofer to a 12" woofer, though. The 12" will obviously have more surface area to move more air.
