Default Look for online sites and specific products to buy to make fiberglass enclosure

Specifics would be ideal, from someone who has done this themselves. If I can buy stuff at home depot, that's just as good.

I want to build a box on the left side of my A4 trunk, to fit behind the cover panel, to house 1 10" sub (JL 10w3v2 most likely).

Box would be mixture of MDF and fiberglass.

Default Try www.selectproducts.com They have everything....

you will need to make your enclosure. Click on the "SP" logo, not the installer challenge. We use them or their products every week around the shop. Typically, you will need a resin, hardener, and fabric. They also have some good application guides to use. You can purchase most of these item (or at least similar items) at Home Depot or Lowes, but if your looking for a one stop shop, give them a try.

Oh yeah- If you like using MDF but want to save a lttle weight try TruPan- weighs a lot less and avail. in same sizes.

Default Fiberglass subwoofer box..I used Local Hardware stuff, but..(more)

It would have been better to use the more professional stuff. I would order from www.selectproducts.com The tools and filler to make the box stronger and thicker more quickly would have helped a ton. The Bondo All-Purpose resin and glass first layer is the hardest part. You have to stick it in at difficult angles and try and get all the air bubbles out from in between. The resin I used would dry in ~ 10 minutes. It is VERY temperature dependant. At ~70 degrees, that 10
minutes comes up fast and the stuff gets hard, but at ~55 degrees it took almost 35minutes!! I was scared that I had totally screwed up, but it eventually set-up normally. After I put down ~2-3 layers, I let it set overnight
and then peeled it out of the car. After that it was just simply a matter of thickening the resin and glass to at least 1/4" inch all the way around. Some areas definitely get thicker
easier than others.
I used ~1.2-1.5 GALLONS of Bondo All-Purpose resin, and ~50-60 square feet of fiberglass.
I had to build-up all sides and edges, then sand and grind until they were all flat. One trick I used to flatten the edges of the box was after getting it very close with a grinder, I layed
the box on my driveway, relatively smooth concrete and "sanded" it flat. Once I had a flat face to the fiberglass part it was relatively easy. I traced the box right onto the 3/4" MDF and cut out the front. I then used this thick heavyduty epoxy to glue 3/4" MDF face on the box. I had about a 1/4"bead of epoxy all the way around before I stuck on the front. It set up overnight and was solid and airtight. Not a bad idea to have a buddy help with layering the glass, I had my wife help. Good Luck.

Default question

Looks like you fiberglassed with all the interior pieces in.. I thought glassing is messy and gets all over the place easily? Was that not the case?

Default It is VERY Messy, I masked and put plastic everywhere...more

The picture is after I pulled the plastic out of the car. The install in the link below shows the kind of masking job to do. It really depends on the way your car is set up. I had no compartment in my 98.5 1.8TQMS, but some later cars have a small storage space there. If you have one similar to mine, there is no space behind the panel. There was a strange "bump" there that I removed, but otherwise I molded to fit the space. I know people have done one on each side, but I am not into major boom, more sound quality. I used bass test CD's and the thing gets damn loud and low with one 10". I know more is available because I am only using 1 Bridged channel from my ADS P650 Amp ~120 watts. I know ADS is very conservative, but I am sure a dedicated sub amp could hit harder. Good Luck.

http://www.bstage.com/carstereoinstall</a
