I'm working with an '03 and I see you have an '01 so things might be different...are you talking the adapters that let you put bigger speakers in the doors or the adapters that let you mount deeper aftermarket speakers of the same size?

I plan on either using the stock speakers for a template or trial and error with cardboard and my trusty Xacto blade. I'll let you know what works best. You'll need to use 3 or 4 layers of 1/2" MDF...Home Depot has 2x4 sheets of 3/4" for about $5...2 layers should do the trick dependiong on the depth of your new speakers. So far I'm struggling to get the door panels off but I'm going to give it another go tonight...see my other thread here for details.

Default If we're talking a B6...

Then the purpose of the adapters is to give sufficient clearance for the new speakers and most that have done it claim you need 1.5-2" so 2 layers of 3/4" or 3 layers of 1/2" minimum. I can't confirm this till I get my hands on the project myself...hopefully this weekend.

Default ah... i gots b5

I think audi231 and I just want to mount 5.25 in 4" hole on the B5 A4. Just need to adapt the mounting points, so no need for build up.
