i wanna do something about my A3's lack of bass/ flat sound. the mids and highs are alright, i'd just like a bit more bass kick. i have the RNS-E/bose system.
clearly the best (expensive) way to do it requires a custom sub enclousure, amps, new speakers, rewiring, maybe cleansweep, etc.. but thats too much.
i read that simply disconnecting the centre "channel" speaker helps a bit.. what about disconnecting the 5.25in "subwoofer" in the back and adding a small amplified tube sub? a dual 6in or 8in ~100W with its own integrated low-pass crossover and hi/lo inputs (<$300)
can this be done?
how much distortion should i expect from the bose amp DSP?
can you tap the line pre-amp?
are them Bazooka tubes P.O.S i shouldnt even be looking at?
please give the noob some advice, TIA.

Couple of ideas if on a tight budget:
1) Try unplugging the sub. In my allroad the Bose sub was actually muddying and masking the bass from my door speakers.
2) Consider replacing the door speakers and possibly adding an amp. In my allroad I ran Hertz of Italy's Hi-Energy components for a month. I was shocked at how good they sounded off the Bose amp.
3) Consider spending a little dough to retain the utility and appearance of the car.
The sub in this pic can be ordered from us loaded with the shallow 8" for $500. Add a good small amp for $150-200. Install yourself or have a pro do it...

Pics of our custom molded A3 sub

but like i said - too much $$$, even for just the custom sub and a small amp.
the 6in bazooka is only 17in long, the 8in is 22in long.. i think not large enough to affect utility and appearance of the car. i have enough random crap back there already, the tube should feel at home among the various objects![Big Grin](https://www.audiworld.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif)
i'd still like to know if it can be done, perhaps using a different, less POSty brand.
keep in mind that i dont expect extreme gains in performance, just some real bass kick.. i'll see how unpluggin the "sub" and center speakers sounds.
thanks for the advice.

I made my own stealth enclosure for the old A3 (8L chassis) which replaces the plastic sh1tbox Audi/Bose seem to think is adequate for a ?25k car.
18mm MDF with a curved underside, housing a JL Audio 6.5" or 8" sub and driven off a 250wrms Alpine amp hidden behind the rear door card.
Totally stealth and an amazing transformation, proper clean punchy bass with no real low drone you sometimes get with a 10 or 12" unit.
Took some work though to get it right, but now I've sold/installed over 30 of them in the UK. Not sure how different the 8P chassis is to the 8L. Knowing Audi probably very different, but you can plug straight into the disconnected sub loom to get the pre-outs and the remote on, cut off the end of a pair of short RCA's and solder some mini spade connectors to the signal wires and screens. All you then need is to run a chunky power cable for the amp.
